Rubber carbon black is also used in bicycle brakes.
Rubber black has strong reinforcing properties, making it an additive in many materials that require wear resistance, heat resistance, corrosion resistance, and impact resistance. Early bicycle brake pads used rubber black, and even some current bicycles still use it, such as those on Mobike, Hello Bike, Ofo, and Bluegogo. A closer look reveals that rubber black is used in the front wheel brake pads.
Early bicycle brakes consisted of two black rubber blocks, one on each front and rear wheel. These served as the brakes. Using only rubber as a brake pad would be far from sufficient to withstand the impact of the main tire at high speeds, and its service life would also be short, typically wearing out quickly after a period of friction. By adding rubber black to these two brake pads—mixing the rubber black with rubber in a specific ratio and then adding fiber filaments—their service life can be significantly extended, ensuring safety during driving. Rubber carbon black is used in many areas of a bicycle, such as the handlebars, seat, and pedals. The pedals are particularly slip-resistant, especially the seat. As people increasingly demand comfort, adding rubber carbon black to the seat can make the surface more elastic and extend its service life.
